Hadji Bey's Origins
Hadji Bey's is one of Ireland's longest lasting confectionery brands. Originally created by Harutun and Esther Batmazian, an Armenian trader and his wife, who arrived in Cork in 1902 after fleeing persecution and violence against Armenian Christians taking place in the Ottoman Empire at the time.
They exhibited his confections at the Great Cork International Exhibition in 1902 which resulted in the business being set up in Cork City where it thrived and became a regional favourite. The business exported its confections to Harrods in London and Bloomingdale's in New York. It was even supplied to Buckingham Palace.
Known for its excellent quality and attractive packaging, UHC Confectionery in Newbridge, County Kildare now produces the Turkish delight brand.
