Single Bottle InStock

Made to the original Highland Wineries recipe in Invernessshire in Scotland, Moniack Mead is considered by many to be the best-tasting mead you will find.

ABV 14.6%

Net weight: 1.2kg

Tasting Notes

Nose: The nose is slightly floral with a robust body of caramel aroma. a powerful nose is something that may be lacking in a number of the lighter mead styles.

Taste: It is positively sweet on the palate, however the caramel body carries it well to a balanced, warming mead drink.

About Moniack Winery

Phillipa Fraser converted part of her 16th century ancestral family home, Moniack Castle, into a Winery and started making and selling commercially a range of white and red wines followed by the country wines.  In 1980 Highland Winery became the first business north of Manchester to be granted a license to produce any alcohol apart from whisky.  Silver Birch was the first wine to be produced, using the sap from locally tapped birch trees. This was followed by Moniack Mead, Elderflower, Meadow Sweet, Rowanberry and Elderberry. A range of liqueurs was then developed and jellies for eating with meat.  Highland Winery no longer produce their products at the castle but Moniack Mead is still produced and bottled in the UK to the original recipe and distributed worldwide.  It's considered the best mead being produced in modern times.

How to drink Mead

Mead is probably the oldest alcoholic drink in the world which has traditionally been drunk on special medieval occasions such as weddings, where it was drunk for a month following the ceremony which is why it is sometimes known as 'Honeymoon Mead.' It's always popular during Largs Viking Festival for the annual Viking celebrations.

It's basically fermented honey with water with fruits, spices, grains or hops added.  It has a depth of flavour from the fermented honey which produces a smooth, lingering and delicious taste with hints of caramel.  It's not too sweet and has a lovely honey taste.

Serve it warm or chilled but if you're drinking it cold, it's best served at a slightly cooler than room temperature between 12 – 16°C to enjoy it at its best.
