Kilkerran 12 Year Old Whisky
Kilkerran Single Malt is 100% made in Campbeltown, from barley to bottle at Mitchell’s Glengyle Distillery. Re-opened in 2004 after originally operating from 1872-1925, Mitchell’s Glengyle is under the ownership of Mr Hedley Wright, chairman of Springbank Distillery and descendant of Glengyle’s founder William Mitchell.
Kilkerran 12yo has been matured in a marriage of bourbon (70%) and sherry (30%) casks and is bottled at 46% ABV. Like all releases from Glengyle’s sister distillery Springbank - the whisky has not been chill-filtered and no caramel colouring has been added. The whisky is double distilled in the traditional Scottish style and is produced from lightly-peated malt at around 12-15ppm.
The tasting notes are as follows:
Nose: oak notes are dominant, followed by toasted marshmallows and dried fruit pudding, as well as cherries, marzipan and a hint of peat.
Palate: initially fruity with citrus notes and orange peel, after this: vanilla, butterscotch, honeycomb and digestive biscuits can all be tasted and enjoyed.
Finish: velvet and smooth with lemon meringue, to conclude, there’s an oiliness and a saltiness that you’d expect from a Campbeltown dram.
